The Design Futures Lab is a collaborative space of speculative research and design in the MFA Design program at CCA. Design has a vital role to play in shaping both the imagination and our tangible expression of the future, building towards more resiliency, equity, and inclusion. In manufacturing processes, technology development, urban engagement, and aesthetic expressions, design is at the forefront of these questions. Design Future Lab takes this charge, designing and testing innovating ideas and shaping both the form and values of our future cities and environment.

Design Futures Lab works through collaborations with universities, companies, and non-profits to connect our research and design innovations to larger global challenges and conversations. These collaborations can take many shapes, from a single event to an ongoing research project.

  • Studio collaborations bring material or topic challenges into graduate classrooms to work with teams of students on possibilities and to identify new potential
  • Workshops and sprints focus student and faculty time on topic research and narrative proposals
  • Longer engagements allow us to put together a series of courses and research associates that build over a year or more
